What sets this piece apart

• It's not a triquetra: the triquetra has three loops, this one has four. The original title was wrong, and we have corrected it.
• The weave is openwork: you can see through it, which lightens a piece over three centimeters long and makes it legible from a distance.
• The Venetian chain does not twist: its interlocking square links keep the pendant upright, where a thin chain would let it spin.

The witch's knot is a modern symbol, popularized in the 20th century by Wicca — it is neither ancient Celtic nor Norse. But the knot as a magical object has a documented and fascinating northern history: sailors used to buy three-knotted ropes from the seeresses of the Far North. Untying the first knot summoned a breeze, the second a good fair wind, and the third a storm that no one wanted. Olaus Magnus described this trade in his History of the Northern Peoples in 1555, and the belief in "wind knots" remained alive on the coasts of the North Sea until the 19th century. To knot was to bind; to untie was to release.
