The sign that keeps you from getting lost — and is eight hundred years younger than people think
A 316L steel round pendant engraved with the Vegvísir, its eight staves radiating from the center, each ending in a different motif. Link chain and lobster clasp. It comes in a resealable metal tin, ready for gifting.

What sets this piece apart
- 316L steel does not rust or tarnish: it is the so-called surgical grade, which can be worn in the shower and against the skin without any reaction.
- The eight staves are all different: look at the ends — crosses, forks, circles. This is what distinguishes an engraved Vegvísir from a simple rosette.
- The metal tin completes the gift: no plastic bag to hide. It can be closed and then used as a jewelry box.

Did you know?
The Vegvísir is not Viking, and the gap is wider than one might imagine: it appears for the first time in the Huld Manuscript, compiled in Iceland in 1860 by Geir Vigfússon. Eight centuries separate this drawing from the Viking Age. The name means "the one that shows the way" (vegur, the way; vísir, the guide), and the manuscript never mentions navigation: it promises that the one who wears this sign will not get lost in a storm, even if the weather is unknown to them. It is therefore not a compass, it is a protection. However, it belongs to a very real Icelandic tradition, that of the galdrastafir, or magic staves, documented from the 16th to the 19th century — and none of its staves are Futhark runes.
To learn more, our feature on the Vegvísir traces the history of the sign, our entire Vegvísir section offers it in various forms, and the same pendant is available in a gold finish.

Is the Vegvísir a Viking symbol?
No, and we would rather say so. It appears in an Icelandic manuscript from 1860, eight centuries after the Viking Age. It belongs to the Icelandic magical tradition of the galdrastafir, not to Scandinavian archaeology.
Is it a real compass?
No. The manuscript that describes it only promises that whoever carries it will not get lost in a storm. It is a form of protection, not a navigation instrument.
Does 316L steel turn black?
No. It is the so-called surgical grade: it does not rust, does not tarnish and does not cause skin reactions.
Does the necklace come in a gift box?
Yes, in a resealable metal box, ready to give and reusable as a jewelry box.
