A golden raven in a crescent
The bird occupies the entire center, wings spread, body in golden relief; a chiseled steel crescent frames it and closes the composition. Stainless steel and PVD plating, approximately 4 cm, on a 60 cm braided chain. Find it in our Viking Necklace collection.
Huginn and Muninn
Their names mean "thought" and "memory". The Grímnismál describes their daily flight over Midgard and their evening return to Odin's shoulders—then reveals an unexpected confession from the god: he fears that Huginn might not return, but he fears even more for Muninn. Losing memory worries him more than losing thought. Our article on Odin's ravens elaborates on the episode.
The raven as a war standard
Odin's ravens were not just a poetic image: the Vikings carried them into battle. The Hrafnsmerki, the raven banner, appears in several Anglo-Saxon chronicles—Æthelweard's account tells of the capture of such a standard from the Danes in 878, and legend held that it would beat its wings upon the approach of victory, and hang limp before defeat. The flag of the Isle of Man and that of Orkney still preserve the memory of it. A god's symbol that became a military ensign, then a regional emblem: few Norse motifs have had such a long life.
The finish
The raven is gold-plated via PVD deposition, a process that bonds the layer to the metal rather than simply coating it—it withstands daily wear. The steel crescent that frames it remains raw, which accentuates the contrast.
Features
- Material: stainless steel, golden raven (PVD)
- Pendant: approximately 4 cm
- Chain: braided link, 60 cm, lobster clasp
For whom
It pairs with the Odin's ravens bracelet, the same motif for the wrist.
Which raven is depicted?
Nothing names it, but in Norse imagery the raven points to Huginn and Muninn, “thought” and “memory,” Odin's two birds who fly across the world every day and come back to tell him what they have seen.
Why is the raven inside a crescent?
It is a decorative choice: the chased crescent frames the gold-tone bird and sets off its outspread wings. It is not an archaeological motif.
Does the gold tone last?
Yes. It is a PVD coating on stainless steel that stands up to daily wear. Just avoid abrasives.
