The hammer that was actually worn
Mjölnir is not just Thor's weapon in myths: it is the most widespread piece of jewelry from the entire Viking Age. Nearly a thousand hammer-shaped pendants have been unearthed in Scandinavia and as far away as England — worn around the neck as amulets by both men and women. This necklace captures that spirit: a massive 316L stainless steel hammer with a striated handle and a head engraved with geometric patterns, suspended from a 60 cm braided chain that stands up to the weight of the pendant. Find it in our Viking Necklace collection.
What archaeology says
For a long time, the identification of these pendants remained debated. The debate ended in 2014 in Købelev, Denmark, with the discovery of a 10th-century hammer engraved with the runic inscription hmar x is, "this is a hammer." An interesting detail: in Trendgården, a caster's mold allowed for the casting of both Thor's hammers and Christian crosses. The same craftsman served both clienteles. For whom
A gift that gets straight to the point for a fan of Norse mythology, a biker, a strength athlete — or for yourself. Pair it with the Odin's Ravens bracelet, in the same steel finish.
Does the Mjölnir pendant have historical significance?
Yes. Nearly a thousand hammer-shaped pendants have been found in Scandinavia. In 2014, one discovered at Købelev in Denmark bore the runic inscription “hmar x is,” “this is a hammer” — proof that these amulets did represent Mjölnir.
How long is the chain?
The chain is 60 cm long, in a sturdy braided link: the pendant falls at the breastbone on an average man's build.
Is 316L stainless steel water-resistant?
Yes. 316L is the steel used for quality jewelry: it does not turn black, does not rust and handles the shower. Just avoid long swims in seawater or chlorinated pools.
