The Vegvísir and the Futhark runes, engraved on a steel medallion
This Vegvísir necklace features a round, flat, silver-toned stainless steel medallion. In the center, the Icelandic compass is finely engraved: eight branches, each ending in a different sign. Around the edge, a circle of Elder Futhark runes frames the motif. Find it in our Vegvísir collection and among our Viking necklaces and pendants.
What sets this piece apart
- A sharp design: the line engraving on a polished disc keeps each branch of the Vegvísir clearly legible.
- Two traditions united: the Icelandic sign in the center, the oldest runic alphabet around it.
- No protruding relief: the medallion lies flat against the chest.
- Stainless steel: it does not rust and withstands daily wear.
Do you prefer a thick medallion with raised chiseling? See our patinated steel Vegvísir necklace or its gold-enhanced version.

Did you know?
Vegvísir means "that which shows the way" in Icelandic. The sign first appeared in the Huld manuscript, a collection of magical signs compiled in Iceland in 1860, long after the Viking Age. It is accompanied by a promise: the wearer will not get lost in storms or bad weather, even on a path they do not know. The runes that surround it here are much older: the Elder Futhark was already being used for writing in the 2nd century, and its name comes from its first six letters: f, u, th, a, r, and k.

What does the Vegvísir engraved on this necklace mean?
Vegvísir means “the one who shows the way” in Icelandic. According to the Huld manuscript, compiled in Iceland in 1860, whoever carries this sign will not lose their way in storms or bad weather, even on a road they do not know. That is why it is nicknamed the Viking compass.
Is the Vegvísir a Viking Age symbol?
It first appears in the Huld manuscript, in 1860, long after the Viking Age, and no known Viking object bears it. It comes from the Icelandic magical tradition. The runes engraved around the medallion, on the other hand, are older than the Vikings.
Which runes surround the medallion?
Runes from the Elder Futhark, the oldest runic alphabet, in use from the 2nd century onward. It has 24 signs and takes its name from its first six letters: f, u, th, a, r and k.
Can this necklace be worn every day?
Yes. Stainless steel does not rust and stands up to daily wear. A soft, dry cloth is all you need to care for it.
How is it different from the other Vegvísir necklaces in the store?
This one is a flat, polished medallion, engraved with a fine line, on a thin chain. Our Vegvísir Compass Runes necklaces are thicker medallions, chased in relief, in patinated or gold-accented steel, on a braided chain.
