A barrel, not a tube — and a circle of runes around the sign

This beard and hair bead is like nothing else in the range: instead of a straight cylinder, it has a barrel-shaped body with ribbed sides, bordered at the top and bottom by a row of beads, and on the face a Vegvísir enclosed in a ring of runes.

Find this model in our collection of Viking beard and hair beads.

What sets this beard bead apart

  • The most elaborate piece in the series: three different registers on a single face — the ribs, the beaded row, and the central medallion.
  • Its shape makes it sit differently on the braid: the central bulge acts as a stopper, while the narrower ends allow the hair to pass through.
  • A slip-on, not a clasp: the bead is slid onto the strand before braiding. It is the thickness of the braid that keeps it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
  • Bore of approximately 6 mm: the only criterion that really matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose hair.

Did you know?

The ring of runes surrounding the sign is a decorative touch from the manufacturer, not an inscription to be translated: the characters were chosen to fill the circle, not to form words. This is something to keep in mind before looking for a hidden message in them. The central motif, however, is indeed the Vegvísir from the Huld manuscript, compiled in Iceland in 1860 — eight branches, all ending differently, which distinguishes it from the Ægishjálmur.
