The Valknut — three interlocking triangles, and an unanswered question
Three triangles nested within one another, engraved on a medallion on an antique silver-finish beard and hair bead. Unlike the Vegvísir, this is indeed a Viking Age motif — it has been found on stone.

What sets this beard bead apart
- A purely geometric motif, which remains sharp at a small scale where figurative interlacing becomes blurred.
- Three triangles drawn as a single line: the design closes in on itself, with no visible beginning or end.
- A slip-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock before braiding. It is the thickness of the braid that keeps it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approx. 6 mm hole: the only criterion that truly matters. It must be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The Valknut is archaeologically attested, which is rare for a popular Norse symbol: it is found on the Stora Hammars I stone in Gotland, on the Tängelgårda stone, and on objects from the Oseberg ship. Its name, however, is modern: valknútr — "knot of the slain" — is a contemporary Norwegian word; no ancient source names the motif. On stones, it accompanies scenes featuring Odin and fallen warriors, which has fueled the funerary interpretation — but no text explains it.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources to back it up, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

Is the Valknut a real Viking symbol?
Yes, unlike the Vegvísir. It's found carved on the Gotland stones — Stora Hammars I, Tängelgårda — and on objects from the Oseberg ship.
What does the Valknut mean?
No ancient source explains it. Even its name is modern. On the stones, it appears in scenes connected with Odin and with dead warriors, hence the common funerary interpretation.
Which finish should I choose?
Antique silver stands out on light hair and gray beards; the same model exists in patinated bronze, warmer in tone, for brown or red hair.
How thick a strand does this bead fit?
The hole measures about 6 mm, which suits a medium-thickness beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
