The Patinated Bronze Valknut — a motif found on stone
Three interlocking triangles, engraved into a medallion surrounded by interlace, on a beard and hair bead made of a patinated bronze alloy. It is one of the rare symbols in this category for which archaeology provides a direct trace.

What sets this beard bead apart
- A bold geometry that stands up to the small size: at ten millimeters, the design remains immediately legible.
- The patinated bronze darkens the background of the medallion, making the three triangles stand out in relief.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock before braiding. The thickness of the braid holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approximately 6 mm hole: the only criterion that really matters. It should be a little tighter than the finished braid, and a little wider than the loose strand.

Did you know?
The Valknut appears on the Stora Hammars I stone in Gotland, on the Tängelgårda stone, and on items from the Oseberg ship: it is a Viking Age motif, not a later invention. What we don't know is what it meant. Its current name, valknútr, is a modern Norwegian word; no ancient text names or explains it. The scenes where it appears involve Odin and the dead in battle, which makes a funerary interpretation plausible—but it remains a hypothesis.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards with supporting sources, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers every sign one by one.

Is the Valknut attested by archaeology?
Yes. It appears on the Stora Hammars I and Tängelgårda stones on Gotland, as well as on objects from the Oseberg ship.
Where does the name “Valknut” come from?
It's a modern Norwegian word meaning “knot of the slain.” No ancient source gives this motif a name.
What does it represent?
No text tells us. The carved scenes in which it appears involve Odin and dead warriors, which supports a funerary reading — without proving it.
How thick a strand does this bead fit?
A hole of about 6 mm, suitable for a medium-thickness beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
