The three-branched knot, centered and surrounded by scrolls

A single three-branched knot in the center of a medallion, surrounded by scrolls, on a beard and hair bead made of bronze-patinated alloy. The triquetra is treated here like a coat of arms, not as a repeating pattern.

What sets this beard bead apart

  • The patinated bronze darkens the background of the medallion: the knot stands out all the more as it is the only motif on the face.
  • A design drawn with a single continuous line, with no beginning or end — it can be read from any angle; the bead has no right-side up.
  • A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock of hair before braiding. It is the thickness of the braid that holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
  • Bore hole of approximately 6 mm: the only criterion that truly matters. It must be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?

The triquetra can be found engraved on the Funbo runestone in Sweden, and just as much in Irish insular art: the Book of Kells contains several. This is why the "Celtic knot" label is only half-correct — the two regions crossed paths throughout the Viking Age, and untangling one from the other on a given interlace often requires a specialist's eye. Its interpretation as a symbol of the Trinity comes from Christianization and not from pagan usage.
