The triquetra — three branches drawn with a single stroke
An alloy beard and hair bead with an antique silver finish, entirely covered in interlacing patterns forming triquetras. No runes here: the motif runs across the entire surface, with no cartouche or isolated sign — it is the most ornamental piece in the collection.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The only antique silver finish model in this series: it pairs well with light hair as well as grey beards, whereas bronze adds warmth.
- A knot drawn with a single continuous line, with no beginning or end — the motif can be read from any angle; it has no specific orientation.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock of hair before braiding. It is the thickness of the braid that secures it, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approximately 6 mm bore: the only criterion that really matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The triquetra belongs to two worlds at once. It is found engraved on the Funbo runestone in Sweden, and also in Irish Insular art — the Book of Kells contains several. Calling this motif a "Celtic knot" is therefore half-wrong: the Scandinavian and Insular areas crossed paths extensively during the Viking Age, and untangling one from the other on a given interlace often requires an expert's eye. As for its interpretation as a symbol of the Christian Trinity, that is a later development: it dates from Christianization, not pagan usage.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources provided, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

Is the triquetra a Celtic or a Viking symbol?
Both. It appears on the Funbo runestone in Sweden as well as in the Irish Book of Kells. The two cultural spheres crossed paths throughout the Viking Age.
What does the triquetra mean?
No medieval source gives it a fixed meaning. Its Christian reading as a symbol of the Trinity came after Christianization; the reading as body, mind and soul is modern.
How does the finish differ from the rune beads?
This one is in antique silver, cooler in tone, whereas the rune beads in this series are in patinated bronze. It's the only silver-colored model in the set.
How thick a strand does this bead fit?
A hole of about 6 mm, suitable for a medium-thickness beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
