The Bearded Mask in Antique Silver — a face, not a tube
This beard and hair bead looks nothing like a cylinder: it is a bearded mask made of an alloy with an antique silver finish, featuring large round eyes, a drooping mustache, and a chin framed by interlace patterns. The hole runs through the piece from the back.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The only figurative piece in the department along with the bear paw: it is worn alone, at the end of a braid, whereas tubes are easily aligned in groups.
- The antique silver accentuates the hollows of the eyes and the grooves of the beard — the relief is clearer than in bronze.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock of hair before braiding. It is the thickness of the braid that secures it, so there is nothing that can break.
- Hole of approximately 6 mm: the only criterion that really matters. It must be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
Bearded masks are a real motif in Scandinavian art: they can be found on the Sigtuna runestone in Sweden, on metal fittings, and on pendants, and one of the most famous adorns a clasp from the Oseberg ship. They are often associated with Odin, but no source confirms this: they are faces, and their identity remains open. This type of mask sometimes circulates under the "Slavic" label; however, the ornamental vocabulary—the interlace, the treatment of the face—belongs to Scandinavian art, and that is how we present it.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with supporting sources, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What does this mask depict?
A bearded face, a motif that is truly attested in Scandinavian art — the Sigtuna stone, metal fittings, pendants, the Oseberg clasp. It's often associated with Odin, but no ancient source says so.
How is it different from the bronze version?
The model is identical; only the finish changes. Antique silver brings out the hollows of the eyes and beard more, while bronze warms up the whole piece.
Is it worn like the other beads?
Yes, but its figurative shape makes it better suited to the end of a braid, on its own. The engraved tubes, on the other hand, line up well several at a time on the same braid.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
The hole runs through the back of the piece and measures about 6 mm, suited to a beard braid of medium density.
