A hammer-shaped bead — the only one in the range that isn't round
Neither a tube nor a mask: this beard and hair bead features the silhouette of Mjölnir, the hammer head seen from the front, topped by its short handle through which the hole passes. On the face, a Valknut; on the sides, two panels of interlace.

What sets this beard bead apart
- A cutout silhouette, not a cylinder: it stands out at the end of a braid where tubes would blend into the hair.
- Two symbols on a single piece — the shape of the hammer and the engraved knot — without one overshadowing the other.
- A slip-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock before braiding. It is the bulk of the braid that secures it, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approx. 6 mm hole: the only criterion that truly matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock.

Did you know?
Thor's hammer is the most well-attested Nordic symbol in existence: more than a thousand Mjölnir-shaped pendants have been found in Scandinavian graves and hoards, made of silver, bronze, and iron. Their distribution accelerated in the 10th century, at the time when the Christian cross was spreading — many see this as a response, a way of signaling one's allegiance. A mold from Fyrkat, in Denmark, even allowed for casting a cross and a hammer in the same operation.
To go further, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources to support them, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What is Mjölnir?
Thor's hammer. It's the best-attested Norse symbol: more than a thousand hammer-shaped pendants have been found in Scandinavian graves and hoards.
Why a Valknut on a hammer?
It's a manufacturer's choice, not an ancient pairing. Both motifs are attested separately; nothing suggests they were combined in the Viking Age.
Is it worn like the cylindrical beads?
The hole runs through the hammer's handle and is about 6 mm, like the rest of the collection. Its cut-out silhouette makes it better suited to the end of a braid.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
A hole of about 6 mm, suited to a beard braid of medium density or a thin braid of hair.
