A barrel-shaped body, striated sides, two rows of beads along the edges and, in the center of the face, a Vegvísir enclosed within a ring of runes: this beard and hair bead made of bronze-patinated alloy is the most intricate in the series.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The patinated bronze settles into the grooves and hollows of the medallion: this is the piece where the contrast plays the most.
- A shape that holds differently: the central bulge acts as a stopper, while the tapered ends allow the braid to flow through.
- A slip-on, not a clasp: the bead is slid onto the lock before braiding. It is the thickness of the braid that secures it, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approximately 6 mm bore: the only criterion that truly matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

The ring of runes around the symbol is decorative: the characters are there to fill the circle and do not spell out any words. The central motif is the Vegvísir, which is only known from the Huld Manuscript compiled in Akureyri in 1860—a collection of Icelandic sigils, dating eight centuries after the Viking Age. The promise that accompanies it in the manuscript is beautiful: whoever wears it will not lose their way, even in a storm.
