The most worn jewelry of the Viking Age
Nearly a thousand hammer-shaped pendants have been unearthed, from Scandinavia to the English Danelaw. For a long time, their identification remained debated—until the 2014 discovery in Købelev, Denmark: a 10th-century specimen engraved with the runic inscription hmar x is, "this is a hammer." What motifs are engraved on the hammer?

Did the Vikings really wear Thor's hammers?
Yes, and in large numbers: nearly a thousand hammer pendants have been found. The one from Købelev, in Denmark, bears the runic inscription “hmar x is” — “this is a hammer” — and settled the debate once and for all in 2014.
