A compass guarded by two blades
In the center, the Vegvísir engraved in gold on a dark steel disc; surrounding it, a compass rose with points radiating in the four directions; behind it, two crossed swords protruding from the composition. Approximately 5 cm, on a 60 cm braided chain. Find it in our Viking Necklace collection.
What the Vegvísir really is
It is almost always presented as "the Viking compass." This is not accurate. The Vegvísir appears for the first time in the Huld, an Icelandic manuscript compiled by Geir Vigfússon in 1860 — about eight centuries after the end of the Viking Age. The accompanying text, however, is magnificent: he who bears this sign will not lose his way, even in bad weather, even without knowing the path. An Icelandic symbol from the 19th century, then, whose promise is worth more than the false antiquity attributed to it. Our article on the Vegvísir covers this history.

For whom
For travelers. It complements our braided leather Vegvísir bracelet.
Is the Vegvísir a true Viking symbol?
No, and we would rather say so than sell a legend. It first appears in the Huld, an Icelandic manuscript compiled in 1860 — about eight centuries after the Viking Age. It is an Icelandic symbol, a superb one, but modern.
So why wear it?
Because its promise is a beautiful one: whoever carries this sign will not lose their way, even in bad weather, even without knowing the route. You can love a symbol without inventing an extra thousand years of history for it.
What are the crossed swords?
Two blades set crosswise behind the compass rose, protruding at the four cardinal points. It is a decorative choice, not an archaeological motif.
