Sting — the blade that glows blue when Orcs are near
The willow-leaf blade of Sting, the sword of Bilbo and later Frodo, molded in silver ABS: crescent guard with upturned tips, dark leather-wrapped hilt, and cap pommel. The flat of the blade bears the tengwar inscription from the film prop.

What makes this piece unique
- Form reveals its origin: a short blade, wide at the base and tapered into a leaf shape — it is an Elven dagger, and for a Hobbit, a sword.
- Tengwar inscription: engraved in relief along the fuller, it reproduces the one from the film prop. Tengwar is Tolkien's cursive script, distinct from the angular cirth runes.
- Neither sharp nor pointed: molded ABS, rounded edges, thickened tip. It is a costume and display piece.
- Not a weapon: neither sharp nor pointed. This replica is made for costume, reenactment, and wall display.

Did you know?
Sting comes from the same Elven forges of Gondolin as Glamdring and Orcrist, and glows blue when Orcs approach. But the concept of the warning blade did not originate with Tolkien: it comes from the North. In the Kormaks saga, the sword Sköfnung carries specific prohibitions — it must not be exposed to the sun or drawn in front of a woman — and a wound it inflicts only heals with its accompanying stone. Tolkien, who taught Old Norse at Oxford, was familiar with these "character" weapons. He gave them names, a history, and a personality — exactly as the sagas do.
To learn more, our anatomy of a Viking sword allows you to compare this design to that of a blade actually forged in the North.

Does this sword cut?
No. Molded ABS, rounded edges and a thickened tip: it's a costume and display replica.
What does the inscription on the blade say?
It reproduces the one on the film prop, written in Tengwar — the cursive script invented by Tolkien, not to be confused with the Cirth, his angular script modeled on Germanic runes.
Why is the blade so short?
Because it's an Elvish dagger. At hobbit scale, it makes a sword: that's exactly what the text says.
Does Sting really glow blue?
In the story, yes, when orcs are near. On this replica, no: the blade is silver-tone ABS, with no lighting system.
