The runes of the Futhark, carved in stone

A set of 25 tumbled stones, each one unique in shape and veining: the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, engraved and picked out in gold, and one blank stone, the "blank rune" of modern practice. Eight stones to choose from: obsidian, amethyst, rose quartz, rock crystal, lapis lazuli, green fluorite, red agate or red jasper. For rune casting, for learning the runic alphabet or simply for the shelf.

Find it in our Runes & Futhark section.

What sets this set apart

  • Stone rather than wood: polished and heavier in the hand than wooden runes, they last for years without wearing.
  • Legible golden signs: each rune is engraved then picked out in gold, clear on dark stone as on light stone.
  • Every set is unique: these are natural stones, their shape, size and veining vary from one stone to the next.

Prefer wood? See our wooden Viking Rune Set, which comes with a guide and a pouch.

Did you know?

The Elder Futhark has 24 runes, arranged in three families of eight, the ættir; its name comes from its first six letters, F, U, Th, A, R and K. In the Viking Age people already wrote with the Younger Futhark, reduced to 16 signs, but it is the older alphabet that the modern practice of rune casting has kept. According to the Poetic Edda, Odin hanged himself for nine nights on the world tree to win their secret.

To explore further, our article on rune casting presents the methods and the meaning of each rune, and our rune converter writes your name in Futhark.
