The kraken owes its reputation to a bishop: Erik Pontoppidan, Bishop of Bergen, described it in his Natural History of Norway in 1752-1753 as a beast so vast that sailors mistook it for an island. Naturalists today see it as a distorted memory of giant squids, which were finally photographed alive in 2004.
