A Circle That Lets the Hair Show Through

This Viking hair clip is organized around an openwork ring, bordered by runes and empty in the center: the hair appears through it and becomes part of the jewelry. Two confronting dragons frame the circle, their bodies coiled and tails joined beneath the plate. A pin passes through the entire piece. Find it in our collection of Viking hair clips and jewelry.

For a solid circular motif rather than an openwork one, see the oval hair clip.

What Distinguishes This Hair Clip

A void in the center of a piece of hair jewelry is a gamble: it only works if the hair fills it.

  • The result depends on you: blonde, brown, or black, the color that appears in the circle completely changes the effect.
  • Two structural dragons: they frame the void instead of decorating it, which gives the plate its rigidity.
  • A complete runic frieze: the characters go around the ring without interruption.
  • Classic two-piece assembly: separate plate and pin, adjustable tension.

For another, denser dragon composition, see the hair clip with horses.

Did you know?

The Scandinavians often wrote in circles, and not just for decoration. On 11th-century runestones, the text runs along a serpent whose body circles the slab—you start at the head and follow the animal to the tail. This device solves a practical problem: it tells the reader where to enter an inscription that would otherwise have no visible beginning or end. The form serves the reading before serving the ornament.

Brooch or hair barrette: which one to choose?

TypeWhere it is wornWhat you need to know
Garment brooch (fibula)On a cloak, a shawl, a coat or a jacket lapel. These are the largest pieces in the range. Six close with a straight pin and a clasp; two are penannular: an open ring locked by the tension of the fabric, with no spring to wear out.
Barrette with a hair stick this productIn a bun, a braid or a half-up ponytail. Two pieces: the plate sits on the hair, the stick goes through the lock and holds everything in place. You need enough hair for the stick to go through: with hair shorter than shoulder length, the hold becomes uncertain.
Light barrette or clipOn medium-length hair, including fine hair. The filigree models have a small chain that holds the stick; the flat barrettes close with a clip and need no minimum length. These are the most discreet pieces and the easiest to put in.
Medallion barretteFlat on a half-up ponytail or a low bun.A solid disc that sits on the gathered lock instead of going through it. It is the shape that needs the least hair length, and the only one that shows a scene rather than an ornament.

How to wear it

There is no size to choose, but you need enough hair. These pieces hold by the lock they go through: with hair shorter than shoulder length, the hold becomes uncertain.

How to put in a stick barrette, in three steps: gather your hair into a bun or a half-up ponytail, place the plate over it, then slide the stick into the left slot, through the lock, and out through the right slot. The lock caught between the two holds everything, not a spring.

The sticks on their own (moon, leaves, sword) go straight into a twisted bun, without a plate. The fuller the bun, the better they hold.

Clip barrettes need no minimum length: they are the only ones suited to short or fine hair.

If it slips: add a discreet hair tie under the plate to give the stick something to go through. The four filigree models also have a small chain that holds the stick, so it does not fall if it comes out.

Care: dry cloth. Avoid water, hairspray and styling sprays, which dull the finish and build up in the hollows of the metal.
