The Knot Becomes the Beast
This Viking hair slide features a triquetra at the center of the plate—three intertwined, fully openwork arcs—and then extends one of its ribbons into the body of a dragon towards the right, without any break in the line. The symbol and the animal are the same line. This is the founding principle of Nordic ornament, rarely achieved on a piece of this size. Find it in our collection of Viking hair slides and hair jewelry.
The same knot, alone and in relief, can be found on the triquetra brooch.
What Sets This Hair Slide Apart
Bringing an animal to life from a knot requires the line to never break.
- A single continuous ribbon: the triquetra and the dragon share the same line—the only one in our catalog to do so.
- A fully openwork center: the three arcs allow your hair to show through the heart of the design.
- A recognizable symbol: the triquetra remains identifiable despite its transformation.
- A head on the pin: it corresponds to the dragon on the plate.
For a complete dragon without a symbol, see the stylized dragon hair slide.

Did you know?
The principle of the continuous line has a name among Nordic art historians: the ribbon-beast. The animal has no volume; it is a ribbon whose outline alone is visible, and the craftsman imposes a rule upon himself—the ribbon must never be interrupted. On 11th-century runestones, one can trace the body of the serpent with a finger for several meters without lifting their hand. This constraint is what makes Scandinavian ornament immediately recognizable, far more than its motifs.

Brooch or hair barrette: which one to choose?
| Type | Where it is worn | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Garment brooch (fibula) | On a cloak, a shawl, a coat or a jacket lapel. | These are the largest pieces in the range. Six close with a straight pin and a clasp; two are penannular: an open ring locked by the tension of the fabric, with no spring to wear out. |
| Barrette with a hair stick this product | In a bun, a braid or a half-up ponytail. | Two pieces: the plate sits on the hair, the stick goes through the lock and holds everything in place. You need enough hair for the stick to go through: with hair shorter than shoulder length, the hold becomes uncertain. |
| Light barrette or clip | On medium-length hair, including fine hair. | The filigree models have a small chain that holds the stick; the flat barrettes close with a clip and need no minimum length. These are the most discreet pieces and the easiest to put in. |
| Medallion barrette | Flat on a half-up ponytail or a low bun. | A solid disc that sits on the gathered lock instead of going through it. It is the shape that needs the least hair length, and the only one that shows a scene rather than an ornament. |
How to wear it
There is no size to choose, but you need enough hair. These pieces hold by the lock they go through: with hair shorter than shoulder length, the hold becomes uncertain.
How to put in a stick barrette, in three steps: gather your hair into a bun or a half-up ponytail, place the plate over it, then slide the stick into the left slot, through the lock, and out through the right slot. The lock caught between the two holds everything, not a spring.
The sticks on their own (moon, leaves, sword) go straight into a twisted bun, without a plate. The fuller the bun, the better they hold.
Clip barrettes need no minimum length: they are the only ones suited to short or fine hair.
If it slips: add a discreet hair tie under the plate to give the stick something to go through. The four filigree models also have a small chain that holds the stick, so it does not fall if it comes out.
Care: dry cloth. Avoid water, hairspray and styling sprays, which dull the finish and build up in the hollows of the metal.
What is the main motif?
A triquetra — three interlaced arcs — set in the center of the plate, its outline extending into a dragon's body toward the right.
Symbol or animal?
Both, and they share the same ribbon: it's the only model in the collection where the symbol turns into a beast without a break in the line.
Is it openwork?
Yes, largely. The central triquetra is cut all the way through.
How do I put it in?
Place the plate on the bun, then push the pin through one slot, through the hair, and then through the other slot. The carved head of the pin stays visible.
