A Mass of Crafted Metal
This Viking hair clip is the most substantial in our range: its interlacing patterns cross each other so frequently that the surface appears solid. Up close, you can follow each ribbon; from a distance, you see a crafted plate without distinguishing the layout. It requires hair with substance, but it will hold a bun that lighter models would let slip. Find it in our collection of Viking hair clips and accessories.
At the exact opposite, the fine hair clip weighs almost nothing.
What Distinguishes This Hair Clip
The density of the intersections is a measurable fact, not an impression.
- The highest number of intersections: the ribbons cross each other much more frequently than on the other twelve plates.
- Superior hold: the mass itself contributes to the hold, in addition to the pin.
- Two viewing distances: a detailed pattern up close, a solid mass from afar—few hair accessories offer both.
- Best reserved for thick hair: on fine hair, it will pull.
For the same family of medium-density patterns, see the tight knot hair clip.

Did you know?
The densest interlacing in Insular art achieves a fineness that the naked eye can no longer perceive: on certain pages of the Book of Kells, there are up to ten intersections per square centimeter, drawn without a magnifying glass in the 8th or 9th century. Irish scribes and Scandinavian goldsmiths shared this taste for saturation, and almost identical patterns can be found from one medium to another—parchment on one side, cast metal on the other.

Brooch or hair barrette: which one to choose?
| Type | Where it is worn | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Garment brooch (fibula) | On a cloak, a shawl, a coat or a jacket lapel. | These are the largest pieces in the range. Six close with a straight pin and a clasp; two are penannular: an open ring locked by the tension of the fabric, with no spring to wear out. |
| Barrette with a hair stick this product | In a bun, a braid or a half-up ponytail. | Two pieces: the plate sits on the hair, the stick goes through the lock and holds everything in place. You need enough hair for the stick to go through: with hair shorter than shoulder length, the hold becomes uncertain. |
| Light barrette or clip | On medium-length hair, including fine hair. | The filigree models have a small chain that holds the stick; the flat barrettes close with a clip and need no minimum length. These are the most discreet pieces and the easiest to put in. |
| Medallion barrette | Flat on a half-up ponytail or a low bun. | A solid disc that sits on the gathered lock instead of going through it. It is the shape that needs the least hair length, and the only one that shows a scene rather than an ornament. |
How to wear it
There is no size to choose, but you need enough hair. These pieces hold by the lock they go through: with hair shorter than shoulder length, the hold becomes uncertain.
How to put in a stick barrette, in three steps: gather your hair into a bun or a half-up ponytail, place the plate over it, then slide the stick into the left slot, through the lock, and out through the right slot. The lock caught between the two holds everything, not a spring.
The sticks on their own (moon, leaves, sword) go straight into a twisted bun, without a plate. The fuller the bun, the better they hold.
Clip barrettes need no minimum length: they are the only ones suited to short or fine hair.
If it slips: add a discreet hair tie under the plate to give the stick something to go through. The four filigree models also have a small chain that holds the stick, so it does not fall if it comes out.
Care: dry cloth. Avoid water, hairspray and styling sprays, which dull the finish and build up in the hollows of the metal.
What makes it “dense”?
The number of crossings per centimeter: the ribbons intersect far more often than on the other plates in the range, which creates an almost continuous surface.
Is it heavy?
Yes, it is the most massive of the thirteen stick barrettes. It needs hair with enough body to hold it without pulling.
Can the design be made out from a distance?
Mostly up close. From a distance, the density merges into a solid block, and you see an ornate mass rather than a drawing.
Is it suitable for fine hair?
No, the slim dragon-head barrette, which weighs half as much, is a better choice.
