A Large Outspread Wing, Red Stone at the Base
These wing earrings spread a full wing along the earlobe, with feathers engraved row by row and a red zircon set where the wing attaches. It is the larger of the two wing sizes in our range, the one that reads from a distance. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.

What Sets This Pair Apart
A poorly made wing looks like a leaf: it is the structure of the flight feathers that makes the difference.
- Layered feathers: three distinct rows, from the short coverts to the long flight feathers, exactly as on a real wing.
- Stone at the joint: the red zircon marks the point of articulation and gives the composition a visual center.
- Push-back clasp: a single post keeps the stud flat against the ear despite the length of the motif.
- Stainless steel: the grooves between the feathers stay crisp without getting clogged with oxide.

The most powerful wings in Norse mythology belong neither to an angel nor to a Valkyrie, but to an eagle with a far from pleasant name. The Vafþrúðnismál, the poem of the Poetic Edda in which Odin takes on a giant in a duel of questions, reveals the origin of the wind: at the end of the sky sits Hræsvelgr, “the corpse-swallower”, a giant in the form of an eagle. It is from the beating of his wings that the wind comes over all peoples. There is no wind god in the North — there is a giant carrion eater perched at the edge of the world. So much for the ethereal imagery of wings.

How are these different from your small wings?
These are much larger and show three rows of feathers in detail; the small ones come in a discreet size with a folded wing. Same motif, two very different scales.
Did Valkyries have wings?
Not in the texts or the art of the period. The wings were added by 19th-century Romantic imagery. We sell this model as a wing, not as a historically attested Viking attribute.
Is it heavy on the earlobe?
No, the wing is thin and the cutouts between the feathers remove a lot of material. It weighs barely more than a standard stud despite its length.
Can I wear them singly?
Yes, and it is common: a single wing worn on the more visible ear, the other left bare or with a small stud.
