The Valkyries choose on the battlefield those who will join Valhöll — their name, valkyrja, literally means "chooser of the slain." But the texts do not describe them with wings: they ride horses. Wings are a later addition, popularized by 19th-century romantic imagery and Wagner's opera costumes. Small female figurines found during excavations — such as the one from Hårby, Denmark, discovered in 2012 — show them in long dresses, with a sword and a shield, without a single wing.

No, the texts describe them on horseback. The wings come from 19th-century Romantic imagery and from opera. The Harby figurine, discovered in Denmark in 2012, shows them in a dress with a sword and shield.
