The tightly braided weave known today as "Byzantine" was indeed prevalent in the North: Scandinavian silver hoards, particularly those from Gotland, have yielded dense-linked chains and necklaces of this type, often found alongside Arab dirhams that arrived via the Volga trade route. The Scandinavians did not make them all: many were acquired, traded, or weighed as bullion. A chain could thus be worth its weight before its form—which is why we sometimes find pieces cut with shears.
