Did you know?
Red howlite doesn't occur in nature: this mineral comes out of the ground white, veined with gray. If it takes dye so well, it is because of its porosity — the colorant soaks all the way through instead of staying on the surface, so a broken bead is still red inside. That is what separates a dyed stone from a painted one, and it is also what makes howlite so useful to industry: for a century, it has imitated turquoise, coral and lapis. A modest stone that became the stand-in for all the others.
