Tiger's eye is a mineral that has taken the place of another. Originally, the rock contains crocidolite, a blue asbestos formed of parallel fibers. Over time, silica infiltrates it and replaces these fibers one by one, while maintaining their alignment—a phenomenon geologists call pseudomorphism. The quartz thus inherits the fibrous structure of the vanished stone, and this is what produces the shifting reflection: light reflects off thousands of parallel fibers, and the wave glides as you turn your wrist. What you see moving is the ghost of a mineral that is no longer there.
