Howlite is a stone with a double life. In its natural form, it is white veined with gray — which is what you have here. But its porosity makes it the best candidate in the world for imitation: soaked in a blue dye bath, it takes the color all the way through and becomes indistinguishable from turquoise to the naked eye. It is then sold under names that fool no one in the trade — turquenite, white turquoise, blue howlite. A bargain hunter's tip: a modestly priced, perfectly uniform “turquoise” is almost always howlite.
