The cavities in lava stone all have the same origin: they are gas bubbles. When basalt lava rises, the drop in pressure releases the water vapor and carbon dioxide dissolved in the magma, exactly as when you open a bottle. But the rock cools too quickly for the bubbles to escape: they stay frozen in place, and the stone keeps a permanent snapshot of its own degassing. Geologists call these cavities vesicles — and a rock riddled with them, scoria.
