Two stones side by side — and one is often used to imitate the other
A strand alternating speckled turquoise beads and white howlite beads, strung on a sliding braided cord. The blue and the white echo each other all the way around the wrist.

What sets this piece apart
- The alternation sets the rhythm: two stones instead of one, so the bracelet reads in groups rather than as a continuous line.
- Both stones are speckled: black veins on the turquoise, gray veins on the howlite. The pattern is everywhere, in two registers.
- It goes with the other two: it bridges the turquoise bracelet and the white howlite bracelet, if you want to stack them.

Did you know?
There is some irony in stringing these two stones side by side: howlite is turquoise's great imitator. White and porous, it takes dye all the way through, and the industry has been using it for a century to produce cheap “turquoise” — so much so that most of the world's inexpensive blue beads are dyed howlite. On this bracelet, each plays its own part without disguise: the turquoise stays blue, the howlite stays white. It may be the only time you see them together without one pretending to be the other.
To go further, our Viking bracelets explore the same idea in ten stones, and our Viking jewelry covers the rest of the shop.

What are the two stones?
Speckled turquoise and natural white howlite, alternating along the strand.
Is the howlite dyed here?
No, it's in its natural color: white veined with gray.
Why is howlite said to imitate turquoise?
Because its porosity lets it take a blue dye all the way through. Most cheap turquoise is actually dyed howlite.
How is the bracelet adjusted?
With a sliding knot on a braided cord, so there's no size to choose.
