The dark veins you see running through a turquoise have a name: the matrix. It is the host rock — often sandstone, schist or limonite — in whose cracks the turquoise was deposited, drop by drop, by circulating water laden with copper and aluminum. For a long time the market considered this matrix a flaw and favored stones of a solid blue. Then tastes changed: so-called spiderweb turquoises, crisscrossed by a fine dark network, are now among the most sought after. Yesterday's flaw has become the benchmark.
