Drinking from a skull: the error comes from a 1636 translation

A deep blue tankard featuring a bearded, horned-helmeted skull on its face, framed by two crossed axes. The background is covered in interlace patterns, and the handle is a wide, twisted ring. 304 stainless steel interior, approximately 400 ml.

What sets this piece apart

  • Blue is the rarest color in our collection: on a shelf of brown and silver tankards, it is the only one you can spot from afar.
  • The relief is deep: horns, beard, and axe heads stand out clearly from the body, creating bold shadows.
  • Two materials, two roles: resin holds the decor, food-grade 304 steel holds the drink.
  • Hand wash only: the sculpted resin is neither dishwasher nor microwave safe. That is the price of the relief.

Did you know?

The idea that Vikings drank from the skulls of their enemies comes from a translation error, and we can date it. In the Krákumál, a 12th-century poem, the dying Ragnar announces that in Valhalla, they will drink ór bjúgviðum hausa — "from the curved branches of the skull," meaning horns, since horns grow on the head. In 1636, the Danish scholar Ole Worm provided a Latin version in which they drink "from the skulls of slain enemies." The image spread across Europe and never recovered. Excavations have yielded neither skull cups nor anything similar — but many horns mounted in silver.

To learn more, our tankard collection brings together other models, and our drinking horns offer the form that the North actually used.
