Icelandic law required dragon heads to be removed

A tankard with a body of carved wooden staves, circled by silver bands engraved with interlacing patterns, with an armed warrior in high relief at the center. The handle is a dragon head extending into a wavy body. 304 stainless steel interior, approximately 400 ml.

What sets this piece apart

  • The handle is a fully sculpted piece: head, scales, and coiled body. It is as much a joy to behold as the front, which is rare for a tankard.
  • Two materials, two roles: the resin bears all the decoration, while food-grade 304 steel holds the drink. Nothing sculpted touches what you drink.
  • The wood is carved, not glued: the staves and their grain are molded into the mass, framed by engraved bands.
  • Hand wash: the sculpted resin is neither dishwasher nor microwave safe. That is the price of the relief.

Did you know?

The dragon heads on Norse ships were not fixed: they were detachable. And this was not a practical choice. The Landnámabók reports a provision attributed to the oldest Icelandic law, the Úlfljótslög: no one was to approach the island with a gaping maw or a threatening figurehead, under penalty of frightening the landvættir, the guardian spirits of the land. The carved head was therefore removed before docking and only put back on when departing. A figurehead was not just a decoration: it was a statement of intent, and the law regulated its use.

To explore further, our tankards collection gathers other models, and our drinking horns offer the form that the North truly used.
