A skull bristling with spikes — neither an axe, nor anything Nordic
An antiqued silver skull head, bristling with eight radiant golden spikes, mouth open to reveal fangs, extending downwards into a spiked shaft. The black handle is wrapped all the way to the pommel. This is a mace, and it is pure fantasy.

What sets this piece apart
- It is not an axe: no iron, no edge — a percussion head bristling with spikes. The listing advertised a "double-bladed axe," which was incorrect.
- It is not Viking either: the spiked skull belongs to the vocabulary of heroic fantasy and metal, not Scandinavian art. We prefer to be clear about this.
- A silhouette that stands out: this is the most theatrical piece in the section, the one you notice from ten meters away in a group photo.
- It is not a weapon: the PU foam with a rigid core does not cut, pierce, or strike. This replica is made for costumes, reenactment, and display.

Did you know?
The mace did exist — but not among the Vikings. It became widespread in Europe in the late Middle Ages, when plate armor made edges ineffective: against a steel plate, a blade slides off, whereas a mace transmits the shock through it. Scandinavian excavations from the Viking Age yield spears, axes, swords, and knives — never maces. As for the spiked skull, it comes from no tradition: it is a role-playing game and album cover image, born in the 20th century.
To learn more, our anatomy of the Viking sword details how these weapons were forged, and our dossier on warrior equipment puts each piece into its proper context.

Can this mace be used to strike?
No. PU foam with a rigid core: it is a costume and decor accessory, with no striking capability at all.
Is this an axe or a mace?
A mace. The item has no blade: it is a mace head bristling with spikes.
Did the Vikings use the mace?
No. It appears in Europe in the late Middle Ages, in response to plate armor. No Scandinavian excavation from the Viking Age has produced one.
Is the spiked skull a Norse motif?
Not at all. It is a contemporary fantasy image, with no equivalent in Scandinavian art.
