A bearded axe, a wolf at the crest, and a blade covered in signs
This is the most Nordic piece in the entire department. A bearded blade with an edge that extends downward in a point beneath the socket, an entire cheek strewn with runic marks, two golden bands at the base of the handle—and, crowning it all, a sculpted wolf's head looking along the blade.

What sets this piece apart
- The blade is bearded: the edge extends in an elongated point beneath the socket. It is the most well-documented silhouette from the North—that of the tool one brought along because one already owned it.
- A cheek covered in marks: the blade bears dozens of angular signs engraved in rows. They are decorative and do not form a text: our Futhark guide allows you to verify this yourself.
- PU foam with a rigid core: 50 cm that weighs almost nothing, with no sharp edges, safe for public settings. This is a costume and decorative piece, not a tool.
- This is not a weapon: the PU foam with a rigid core does not cut, pierce, or strike. This replica is made for costumes, reenactment, and wall display.

Did you know?
The bearded axe—skeggøx in Old Norse—does not have this shape for vanity. The cut-out beneath the socket lengthens the edge without adding extra metal, which matters when iron is expensive; it also provides a grip just below the head, with the hand high up, for precise carpentry tasks. It is the tool-weapon par excellence: the same piece is used to square a plank in the morning and is tucked into the belt in the evening. As for the wolf, it is no mere gratuitous ornament in the North: Fenrir, the chained wolf destined to devour Odin at Ragnarök, is one of the most prominent figures in Scandinavian art.
To go further, our anatomy of the Viking sword details how these weapons were forged, and our dossier on warrior equipment places each piece in its context of use.

Does this axe cut?
No. It is made of PU foam with a rigid core, with no cutting edge. It is a costume and decorative replica, unable to cut anything at all.
Do the signs engraved on the head mean anything?
No. They are rune-like marks arranged to fill the cheek of the axe head. They do not spell any word and cannot be translated.
What is a bearded axe?
An axe head whose edge extends down into a point below the socket. This “beard” lengthens the cutting edge without adding weight and lets you hold your hand just below the head.
Can I carry it all day at a convention?
Yes. PU foam weighs very little and has no sharp edges: that is precisely the use it is made for.
