The fan-shaped blade, and the rays radiating from it
A heavily flared bearded blade, with a cheek entirely engraved with rays spreading from the socket toward the edge—a rib pattern that creates the illusion of forged and folded metal. Two golden bands encircle the socket, and a third wraps spirally around the black handle.

What makes this piece unique
- The fan-shaped edge: the blade flares widely downward and extends into a beard below the socket. It is the silhouette of the great Scandinavian axe, scaled down to a one-handed size.
- Radiating ribs: the engraving starts at the socket and spreads toward the edge. It mimics the grain of pattern-welded iron—an effect, not a structure.
- PU foam with a rigid core: lightweight and edge-free, it can be carried all day without arm fatigue.
- Not a weapon: the PU foam with a rigid core does not cut, pierce, or strike. This replica is made for costumes, reenactment, and display.

Did you know?
Such a wide blade has a name in historical sources: the breiðøx, the "broad axe," which we call the Danish axe today. On original specimens, the cheek could reach thirty centimeters with minimal thickness—the metal was thin because it was expensive, and inertia did the rest. It was the weapon of the huscarls, the guard of the Danish and English kings, and it is the weapon depicted being brandished with two hands on the Bayeux Tapestry, where Harold's housecarls hold the hilltop against the Norman cavalry.
To learn more, our anatomy of the Viking sword details how these weapons were forged, and our guide to warrior equipment places each piece in its proper context.

Does this axe cut?
No. PU foam with a rigid core, no cutting edge: it's a costume and decorative replica.
What is a Dane axe?
The breiðøx, or “broad axe”: a thin, strongly flared head mounted on a long handle and held with both hands. It was the weapon of the housecarls, visible on the Bayeux Tapestry.
Do the rays engraved on the head represent anything?
They imitate the grain of pattern-welded iron, the banded structure produced by forge-welding several iron bars together. On a foam replica, it's a surface effect.
What's the difference from the wolf head model?
The head: this one is more flared and engraved with ribs; the other is scattered with rune-like marks and has a wolf carved at the top of the handle.
