A riveted head, a beast at the center — and a clarification
A massive, rectangular hammer head encircled by raised rivets, with each face featuring a round medallion stamped with a stylized beast. The handle is wrapped in brown leather and ends in a ringed pommel. It is the heaviest-looking piece in the entire department.

What sets this piece apart
- The riveted head: molded rivets run around the entire perimeter, and both faces are identically crafted — the piece can be photographed from both sides.
- The animal medallion: a compact beast, deeply engraved within a circle. The vocabulary is that of Nordic animal art, without depicting an identifiable creature.
- PU foam with a rigid core: the look of a war hammer without the weight. A real war hammer of this size would fatigue the wrist in minutes.
- This is not a weapon: the PU foam with a rigid core does not cut, pierce, or strike. This replica is made for costumes, reenactment, and display.

Did you know?
Let’s be frank: the war hammer is not a Viking weapon. Scandinavian excavations from the Viking Age yield spears, axes, swords, and knives — never a war hammer. The long-handled hammer appeared in Europe much later, in the late Middle Ages, as a response to plate armor. What the North truly carried was Mjölnir — not as a hand weapon, but as a symbol, and the archaeological evidence there is overwhelming: over a thousand hammer-shaped pendants found in graves and deposits, from Denmark to Russia. Find them in our Mjölnir jewelry.
To go further, our anatomy of the Viking sword details how these weapons were forged, and our dossier on warrior equipment places each piece in its context of use.

Did the Vikings fight with hammers?
No. No Viking Age excavation in Scandinavia has turned up a war hammer. The war hammer is a much later European weapon, developed to counter plate armor.
Then why sell it in a Viking shop?
Because the hammer remains the quintessential Norse object through Mjölnir, and because this replica has that look. We would rather say so than present it as a historical weapon.
Can this hammer be used to strike?
No. It is PU foam with a rigid core: a costume and decorative accessory, with no striking capability whatsoever.
What does the beast on the medallion represent?
A stylized creature in the vocabulary of Norse animal art. It does not correspond to any identifiable animal or mythological figure.
