The dark horn, the one that shows nothing and contains everything
A buffalo horn, polished to a shine, striated with two grooves carved halfway up. The black color is not a dye: it is the natural hue of this part of the horn. Depending on the piece, smoky gray veins run through the material — no two are identical.
A banquet object that does not seek to shine, to be found in our Viking Banquet Art collection.
What sets this piece apart
- Natural dark horn: black to smoky gray hue, specific to this area of the horn — never two identical pieces.
- Two engraved grooves: a double furrow carved around the body, the piece's only ornamentation.
- Handle carved from the solid piece: wide, curved, providing a secure grip even when the mug is full.
- Two sizes: 420-480 ml for a beer, 501-550 ml for a generous serving.
- Bag included: drawstring canvas pouch — the piece arrives ready to gift.
Its light twin also exists: the Light Buffalo Horn Mug, ivory-blonde with a brown handle, if you prefer a luminous material.

Did you know?
The most beautiful drinking horns of the North disappeared twice. In 1639 and again in 1734, two Danish farmers unearthed two solid gold 5th-century horns in Gallehus, Southern Jutland, covered in figures and bearing a runic inscription — one of the oldest known sentences in a Germanic language. They joined the royal cabinet in Copenhagen. On the night of May 4, 1802, a goldsmith stole and melted them down to extract the metal. Only drawings made before the theft remain, from which current replicas were recreated. The drinking horn was not a second-rate utensil: it was the object one covered in gold.

Which capacity to choose?
| Capacity | What it amounts to | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| 380 ml | A little more than a 330 ml can | A size under 400 ml: you can hold it for a long time without tiring your wrist, for a drink you savor rather than a round. |
| 450 ml | A 330 ml can plus a generous top-up | The compromise for heavily sculpted models: a whole beer, without the weight of a 600 ml tankard once full. |
| 500 ml | A 500 ml bottle, filled to the brim | The beer drinker's benchmark: a whole 500 ml bottle fits, but with no room for the head. |
| 600 ml | A 500 ml bottle, with the room the head needs | The size for long feasts: you pour once and don't get up again. Full, it takes a firm grip. |
| About 420 to 550 ml this product | Roughly a pint | Capacity given as a range: each piece differs slightly. Choose it if a piece that isn't calibrated doesn't bother you. |
Can I pour a hot drink into it?
No. Horn is a natural keratin material: in contact with a scalding liquid it warps, can crack and gives off an unpleasant smell. Keep it for cold or room-temperature drinks — beer, mead, cider, water. For coffee or tea, choose a ceramic or steel tankard instead.
Is it dishwasher-safe?
Never. Heat and steam permanently damage the horn and loosen the wooden base. Rinse with lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap, then dry immediately, inside and out. Don't let it soak.
Will my piece look exactly like the photo?
No, and that's the whole point. Each horn comes from a different animal: the shade, the veining and the tones vary from one piece to another. The photo shows a representative example, not the exact one you'll receive.
Which capacity should I choose?
The 420-480 ml size holds a standard 33 cl beer with its head. The 501-550 ml size suits you if you serve half-liters or want to refill less often. The height stays the same; it's the diameter that changes.
Is there a smell when you unpack it?
Yes, a slight and temporary one. A natural horn smell is possible on arrival. Rinse the piece with lukewarm water and a little baking soda, dry it, and leave it out in the open air for a day: the smell goes away.
