Light-colored horn, blonde and veined like precious wood
An ivory-blonde buffalo horn, streaked with honey and amber veins, polished until translucent at the edges. The handle, carved from a darker area of the same horn, stands out in deep brown. No two pieces are alike: the pattern is the one left by the animal.
The luminous centerpiece for your banquet, to be found in our Viking Banquet Art collection.
What sets this piece apart
- Translucent blonde horn: ivory veined with honey, with areas where light passes through the material.
- Two-tone handle: carved from the dark part of the horn, it contrasts sharply with the light body.
- Smooth surface: no engraving—the natural grain provides all the decoration.
- Two sizes: 420-480 ml or 501-550 ml, your choice.
- Bag included: drawstring canvas pouch, printed with a helmeted skull motif.
Do you prefer black? The Dark Buffalo Horn Viking Mug is the same piece in black horn, with two engraved grooves.

Did you know?
In the halls of the North, people didn't just drink: they swore oaths. The Saga of the Ynglings, which Snorri Sturluson places at the beginning of his Heimskringla, describes the oath-cup—the bragarfull. During great feasts, the heir would place his foot on the footstool of the high seat, receive this cup, speak aloud the vow that would commit his life, and then drink. The gesture sealed the word before witnesses: to drink was to sign. A vessel passed from hand to hand therefore carried more than just beer—it carried commitment.

Which capacity to choose?
| Capacity | What it amounts to | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| 380 ml | A little more than a 330 ml can | A size under 400 ml: you can hold it for a long time without tiring your wrist, for a drink you savor rather than a round. |
| 450 ml | A 330 ml can plus a generous top-up | The compromise for heavily sculpted models: a whole beer, without the weight of a 600 ml tankard once full. |
| 500 ml | A 500 ml bottle, filled to the brim | The beer drinker's benchmark: a whole 500 ml bottle fits, but with no room for the head. |
| 600 ml | A 500 ml bottle, with the room the head needs | The size for long feasts: you pour once and don't get up again. Full, it takes a firm grip. |
| About 420 to 550 ml this product | Roughly a pint | Capacity given as a range: each piece differs slightly. Choose it if a piece that isn't calibrated doesn't bother you. |
Can I pour a hot drink into it?
No. Horn is a natural keratin material: in contact with a scalding liquid it warps, can crack and gives off an unpleasant smell. Keep it for cold or room-temperature drinks — beer, mead, cider, water. For coffee or tea, choose a ceramic or steel tankard instead.
Is it dishwasher-safe?
Never. Heat and steam permanently damage the horn and loosen the wooden base. Rinse with lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap, then dry it immediately, inside and out. Do not leave it to soak.
Will my piece look exactly like the photo?
No, and that is the whole point. Each horn comes from a different animal: the color, the veining and the shading vary from one piece to the next. The photo shows a representative example, not the exact one you will receive.
Which capacity should I choose?
The 420-480 ml size holds a standard 33 cl beer with its head. The 501-550 ml size suits you if you serve half-liters or want to refill less often. The height stays the same; it is the diameter that changes.
Is there a smell when I unpack it?
Yes, a faint and temporary one. A natural horn smell is possible on arrival. Rinse the piece with lukewarm water and a little baking soda, dry it, and leave it out in the open air for a day: the smell goes away.
