The Ægishjálmur — eight identical arms, and it is not the Vegvísir
Eight strictly similar arms radiating from a single center, each ending in the same fork, engraved in a cartouche on a beard and hair bead with an antique silver finish. It is the symbol most often confused with the Icelandic compass — incorrectly.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The perfect symmetry is the criterion: eight identical arms here, eight different endings on the Vegvísir.
- A dense but geometric pattern that remains legible even after the patina is etched into the background.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock of hair before braiding. The fullness of the braid keeps it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approximately 6 mm hole: the only criterion that really matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The Ægishjálmur, literally the "Helm of Awe," is the only one of the two to have truly ancient roots. The word appears in the Poetic Edda and in the Völsunga Saga: the dragon Fáfnir boasts of it — he wore the ægishjálmr and everyone feared him — before Sigurd kills him. Be careful, however: in the texts, it is an object or a power of intimidation, never the eight-branched drawing. That design, like the Vegvísir, is only found in late Icelandic grimoires.
To go further, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources to back it up, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What is the difference between the Ægishjálmur and the Vegvísir?
The eight arms of the Ægishjálmur are identical and start from a single center. Those of the Vegvísir all end differently. It is the only reliable criterion.
Is the Ægishjálmur a true Viking symbol?
The word is: it appears in the Poetic Edda and the Saga of the Völsungs, where the dragon Fáfnir boasts of it. But the eight-armed design is only found in late Icelandic grimoires.
What does its name mean?
Literally “helm of awe” or “helm of terror.” In the texts, it refers to an object or a power of intimidation, not a drawn design.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
A hole of about 6 mm, suited to a medium-density beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
