Patinated Bronze Ægishjálmur — distinguished by its symmetry
Eight identical arms radiating from a center, ending in the same fork, engraved in a cartouche on a beard and hair bead made of a patinated bronze alloy. This is the warm version of our Ægishjálmur, and the exact counterpart to our bronze Vegvísir bead.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The patinated bronze deepens the background and highlights the geometry of the design — on this very regular sign, the effect is sharp.
- Wear it with the bronze Vegvísir bead to show side-by-side the two signs that are constantly confused.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock before braiding. The thickness of the braid holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approx. 6 mm hole: the only criterion that really matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The word ægishjálmr is ancient and well-attested: the Poetic Edda and the Völsunga Saga put it in the mouth of the dragon Fáfnir, who claims that no one dared approach him as long as he wore it. But the texts speak of an object or a power, never a drawing. The eight-branched design on this bead belongs to Icelandic grimoires from the 17th–19th centuries — the same family of documents as the Huld manuscript from which the Vegvísir originates.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources provided, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

Are the Ægishjálmur and the Vegvísir the same symbol?
No. The Ægishjálmur has eight identical arms; the eight branches of the Vegvísir all end differently. The confusion is very widespread, including among sellers.
Does this symbol date from the Viking Age?
The word does, the design does not. Ægishjálmr appears in the Poetic Edda, but the eight-armed design comes from much later Icelandic grimoires.
Which finish should I choose?
Patinated bronze adds warmth and suits brown or red hair; antique silver, available on the same model, stands out better on fair hair and gray beards.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
The hole measures about 6 mm, which suits a medium-thick beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
