Isa, the ice — a single stroke, and complete stillness
A vertical stroke, nothing more, engraved in an oval cartouche on a beard and hair bead made of bronze-patinated alloy. Isa is the most stripped-down sign of the Elder Futhark, and its shape says exactly what it names: nothing moves.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The most minimalist design of the entire alphabet: a single stem, without any branch or oblique line — the rune is recognizable from a distance, even on a ten-millimeter piece.
- A sign of stopping rather than misfortune: ice suspends, it does not destroy.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead is slipped onto the strand before braiding. The fullness of the braid holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approx. 6 mm hole: the only criterion that truly matters. It must be a little narrower than the finished braid, and a little wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The three runic poems agree for once, and all insist on the same thing: the deceptive beauty of ice. The Anglo-Saxon poem describes it as “very cold and immeasurably slippery,” shining “like jewels,” a floor made by frost. The Norwegian poem adds the driest formula in the corpus: it is crossed by covering it with sand. In a world where winter blocked the fjords and immobilized ships for six months of the year, Isa named the most mundane and restrictive thing imaginable.

What does the Isa rune mean?
Ice. The three rune poems describe it as beautiful, shining and dangerously slippery — a floor made by frost.
Why is Isa just a single stroke?
That's its original shape: a single vertical stave, with no branch. It's the simplest sign in the Elder Futhark, and it stays perfectly legible at the size of a bead.
Is Isa a negative rune?
The sources don't use that vocabulary. They describe stopping and the risk of slipping, not an omen. Reading runes as “good” or “bad” is modern.
How thick a strand does this bead fit?
The hole is about 6 mm: a medium-thickness beard braid, or a thin braid of hair.
