A rune compass to keep in your pocket
A metal coin struck in relief with the Vegvísir, the eight-armed Icelandic "compass". A ring of runes surrounds it, then a frieze of animal knotwork runs round the edge. Two finishes to choose from, gold or silver, and each coin arrives in its clear protective capsule.

What sets this piece apart
- Relief that catches the light: the symbol, the runes and the frieze are struck in relief on a polished ground; the coin changes with the angle.
- A lucky charm you can carry: in a pocket, a wallet or a glovebox, the capsule keeps it safe from scratches.
- A small gift with meaning: the Vegvísir is said to guide its bearer through bad weather; it is given to someone setting out.
To go with it, see our Viking Wooden Rune Set, supplied with its guide.

Did you know?
The first Scandinavian coins were struck in the 820s, probably at Hedeby, in the south of Denmark, modelled on Carolingian deniers; some of them show a ship. Yet throughout the Viking Age, silver was mostly weighed: foreign coins, ingots and jewellery cut into pieces went onto small folding scales. As for the Vegvísir, it does not come from that period: it is known from a 19th-century Icelandic manuscript, the Huld. This coin is a modern medal, not an ancient currency.
To explore further, our article on the Vegvísir and its meaning tells the story of the symbol, and our guide to the Elder Futhark helps you read the runes.

What does it mean?
The Huld describes it as a sign that keeps you from getting lost in storms or bad weather, even on unfamiliar ground.
