A Tree That Occupies the Entire Garment

This Viking sweatshirt doesn't just feature a design: it is made of it. The Yggdrasil rises from the collar to the hem, roots included, with branches extending onto the shoulders and sleeves, all outlined in thick black strokes on a white background, in the style of traditional tattooing. Series of runes are tucked between the branches. Find it in our Viking sweatshirt collection.

For the same tree in a repeating frieze rather than a single motif, see the White Yggdrasil and Vegvísir.

What Sets This Sweatshirt Apart

Making a single motif span the entire height of a garment requires the design to be specifically conceived for this format.

  • A unique, full-height motif: the only one in the range to do so—the other twenty-five are composed in zones.
  • Tattoo-style linework: thick lines, cross-hatched shading, no gradients. The result resembles an engraving more than a photographic print.
  • Visible roots: the bottom of the garment features the root system, occupying an area that most prints leave empty.
  • Integrated runes: they are nestled between the branches instead of being aligned in a strip.

For a similar linework treatment but in a black-dominant style, see the skulls and axes model.

Did you know?

We do not know what the name Yggdrasil means. The most common interpretation breaks it down into Yggr, "the Terrible," one of Odin's names, and drasill, "steed"—hence "Ygg's horse," an allusion to the nine nights the god spent hanging from the tree, with hanging described in kennings as riding the gallows. However, other philologists propose yggja, "to terrify," or even a reading where Yggdrasils askr would designate a place rather than a being. The most famous name in Norse mythology remains without a definitive translation.

Which print style to choose?

Print typeWhat it looks likeWhen to choose it
Placed designThe body of the sweatshirt stays plain: the design is limited to the chest, the sleeves and the back. When you want to wear the garment without the design ruling your day. It is also the only model available in fourteen color and ink combinations.
All-over printThe fabric is printed before assembly: front, back, sleeves, hood and right up to the seams. When the garment is meant to be seen. Fifteen different designs, all in polyester, from 2XS to 4XL.
All-over print, finer artwork this productThe same full coverage, but a more detailed drawing and an acrylic, polyester and elastane knit. When you look at a garment up close before buying it, or if polyester alone feels too stiff. Sizes up to 5XL, and up to 6XL for the zip-up model.

Choosing your size

The manufacturer provides no size chart for the sweatshirts in this range. We would rather tell you so than publish a measurement chart we would have made up.

The method that never fails: take a sweatshirt you already wear and that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Write this number down: it is your benchmark. You are comparing one garment with another, without going through a theoretical size, and theoretical sizes are precisely what vary from one manufacturer to another.

The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of the same size. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one: this is the advice that avoids the most returns.

A word about the letters. Beyond XXL, these labels follow no common standard: a 4XL, 5XL or 6XL has no fixed equivalent, and the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.
