A White Tribal on a Black Background
This tribal print t-shirt features the shoulder composition in pure white on black: large coiled spiral, sawtooth friezes, and spear tips descending along the arm. The contrast is maximal, with no intermediate shades.
The same design is available in red and bright green.
What Sets This T-Shirt Apart
White on black is unforgiving: the slightest flaw in the lines is visible, as is the slightest misalignment in the joins.
- Maximal contrast: this is the most legible version of the three: the motif is visible from several meters away, whereas the red and green require being closer.
- Shoulder join: the friezes transition from the torso to the sleeve without interruption, which is the true mark of quality for a sublimated print.
- Polynesian motif: tribal vocabulary from the Pacific, not Nordic art — we clarify this rather than leaving room for misinterpretation.
- Child and adult sizes: from age 4 to 6XL under the same reference, with the chest measurement for each size in the table above.
For a true Nordic motif with full-coverage printing, see the red and gold interlacing medallion.
Choosing Your Size
These measurements are for the garment laid flat, not your body. The width is taken from one armpit seam to the other; the chest measurement is this width multiplied by two. Allow for a one to two-centimeter tolerance: these garments are measured by hand.
| Size | Flat Width | Chest Measurement |
|---|---|---|
| 4 years (100 cm) | 29 cm | 58 cm |
| 5 years (110 cm) | 30 cm | 60 cm |
| 6 years (120 cm) | 32 cm | 64 cm |
| 8 years (130 cm) | 33 cm | 66 cm |
| 10 years (140 cm) | 34 cm | 68 cm |
| 12 years (150 cm) | 35 cm | 70 cm |
| 14 years (160 cm) | 36 cm | 72 cm |
| XXS | 38 cm | 76 cm |
| XS | 40 cm | 80 cm |
| S | 42 cm | 84 cm |
| M | 44 cm | 88 cm |
| L | 47 cm | 94 cm |
| XL | 50 cm | 100 cm |
| 2XL | 52 cm | 104 cm |
| 3XL | 54 cm | 108 cm |
| 4XL | 56 cm | 112 cm |
| 5XL | 58 cm | 116 cm |
| 6XL | 59 cm | 118 cm |
The foolproof method: take a t-shirt you already own that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Enter this figure in the Flat Width column: no calculations needed. This way, you are comparing a garment to a garment, without relying on a theoretical size — and it is precisely these theoretical sizes that vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of an equivalent size. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one: this is the advice that prevents the most returns.
A note on the letters. These sizes follow a specific nomenclature, and beyond XXL, they are almost never used in Western ready-to-wear clothing: a 4XL, 5XL, or 6XL does not correspond to any common standard. Worse, the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another: in this category, an "L" can range from 94 to 112 cm in chest measurement depending on the model. Do not rely on the letter; rely on the centimeter.

Did you know?
The Māori tā moko is not a tattoo in the sense that we understand it. While a needle deposits pigment under the skin leaving a smooth surface, the Māori tattooist worked with an uhi, a chisel carved from an albatross bone, which they tapped with a mallet to incise grooves into the dermis before depositing soot into them. The result was therefore in relief: it could be read with the fingertips. The motifs were not decorative but genealogical — they stated the rank, lineage, and territory of the wearer, to the point that in the 19th century, Māori chiefs signed treaties by drawing their facial moko.

Is this pattern Viking?
No, it draws on Polynesian tribal motifs. Norse art of the Viking Age works with interlaced ribbon-like animals, not repeated geometric bands.
Is Māori tā moko a classic tattoo?
No. It was carved into the skin with an albatross-bone chisel, the uhi, which left raised grooves you could feel to the touch, rather than a smooth surface like a needle tattoo.
Does the white stay white in the wash?
The ink is sublimated, so it is bonded into the fiber: it does not flake. Wash inside out at 30 °C (86 °F), without fabric softener.
What size should I get for a child?
The size labels show the child's age and height, from 4 years (100 cm) to 14 years (160 cm). The chart above gives the matching chest measurement.
