A Red and Gold Interlace Medallion
This Viking interlace t-shirt centers a large red and gold circular medallion on the chest, surrounded by Nordic friezes that cover the sleeves and extend down to the hem. The pattern is purely ornamental: no animals, figures, or text—it is the Nordic decorative vocabulary for its own sake. Find this model in our Viking t-shirt collection.
For interlace treated in silver rather than red and gold, the Silver Mjölnir and Vegvísir covers just as much surface area.
What Sets This T-Shirt Apart
A purely ornamental pattern must hold its own without a subject: everything rests on rhythm and color harmony.
- Two colors only: deep red and gold, on black. A limited palette that gives coherence to a very extensive pattern.
- Regular rhythm: the sleeve friezes follow the pace of the central medallion, which unifies the garment instead of breaking it up.
- Sublimation: the finest interlacing patterns run over the sleeves and seams without being interrupted.
- Lightweight polyester: the only material that holds a true gold—on cotton, this shade turns to beige after a few washes.
If you are looking for the same taste for ornamentation but with a subject, the dragon in a runic medallion adds the beast to the interlace.
Choosing Your Size
These measurements are for the garment laid flat, not your body. The width is measured from one armpit seam to the other; the chest circumference is this width multiplied by two. Allow for a tolerance of one to two centimeters: these garments are measured by hand. The manufacturer does not provide measurements for XS.
| Size | Flat width | Chest circumference |
|---|---|---|
| XXS | 48 cm | 96 cm |
| S | 50 cm | 100 cm |
| M | 53 cm | 106 cm |
| L | 56 cm | 112 cm |
| XL | 59 cm | 118 cm |
| 2XL | 62 cm | 124 cm |
| 3XL | 65 cm | 130 cm |
| 4XL | 68 cm | 136 cm |
| 5XL | 71 cm | 142 cm |
The foolproof method: take a t-shirt you already own that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Use this figure in the Flat width column: no calculations needed. This way, you are comparing garment to garment, without relying on a theoretical size—and it is precisely these theoretical sizes that vary from one manufacturer to another.
The fit runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of the equivalent size. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one: this is the advice that avoids the most returns.
A word on the letters. These sizes follow a specific nomenclature, and beyond XXL, standard Western ready-to-wear hardly uses them: a 4XL, 5XL, or 6XL does not correspond to any common standard size. Worse, the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another: in this category, a "L" can range from 94 to 112 cm in chest circumference depending on the model. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.

Did you know?
Nordic art of the Viking Age is divided into six successive styles, which archaeologists name after the site of their reference discovery: Oseberg, Borre, Jelling, Mammen, Ringerike, and Urnes. They follow one another from the 8th to the 12th century and are distinguished less by their subjects—almost always intertwined beasts—than by the way the animal's body is treated. In Borre, it is thick and braided in tight rings; in Ringerike, it stretches into plant-like ribbons; in Urnes, it thins out until it becomes a thread. An archaeologist can date a piece within thirty years just by looking at the width of the ribbon.

Is there an animal hidden in the design?
The medallion is made of interlaced ribbons, some of which end in stylized heads, as in historical Norse art. But no animal can be identified at first glance.
Is the gold metallic?
No, it's a matte gold ink, with no sheen. Truly metallic inks don't hold up well in the wash.
How many Norse art styles are there?
Six, named after the places where they were found: Oseberg, Borre, Jelling, Mammen, Ringerike and Urnes, from the 8th to the 12th century.
Is the design just as dense on the back?
Yes, the friezes cover the back and sleeves at the same density as the front.
