A Golden Tribal on a Black Background
This all-over print t-shirt uses the same tribal vocabulary as the black and white model but renders it in gold on black, with large spirals coiled on the shoulders and chest, framed by geometric friezes. The effect is warmer and more ornamental. It is available in both children's and adult sizes.
The black and white version of the same vocabulary is the black and white tribal.
What Sets This T-Shirt Apart
Gold on black is the most flattering combination there is — and the hardest to pull off without looking gaudy.
- Matte gold: a muted gold leaning more towards bronze than bright yellow; this is what prevents a flashy effect on such a covered surface.
- Large spirals: the widest coils are placed on the shoulders and upper chest, where the garment is tightest and the pattern is most legible.
- Polynesian pattern: the spirals, friezes, and sawtooth patterns belong to the Polynesian tribal repertoire, not Nordic art — we prefer to clarify this.
- Lightweight polyester: the only material that holds a true gold color over time: on cotton, this shade turns beige after just a few washes.
For a truly Nordic red and gold treatment, see the red and gold interlace medallion.
Choosing Your Size
These measurements are for the garment laid flat, not your body. The width is measured from one armpit seam to the other; the chest circumference is this width multiplied by two. Please allow for a tolerance of one to two centimeters: these garments are measured by hand.
| Size | Flat width | Chest circumference |
|---|---|---|
| 4 years (100 cm) | 29 cm | 58 cm |
| 5 years (110 cm) | 30 cm | 60 cm |
| 6 years (120 cm) | 32 cm | 64 cm |
| 8 years (130 cm) | 33 cm | 66 cm |
| 10 years (140 cm) | 34 cm | 68 cm |
| 12 years (150 cm) | 35 cm | 70 cm |
| 14 years (160 cm) | 36 cm | 72 cm |
| XXS | 38 cm | 76 cm |
| XS | 40 cm | 80 cm |
| S | 42 cm | 84 cm |
| M | 44 cm | 88 cm |
| L | 47 cm | 94 cm |
| XL | 50 cm | 100 cm |
| 2XL | 52 cm | 104 cm |
| 3XL | 54 cm | 108 cm |
| 4XL | 56 cm | 112 cm |
| 5XL | 58 cm | 116 cm |
| 6XL | 59 cm | 118 cm |
The foolproof method: take a t-shirt you already own and that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from armpit seam to armpit seam. Enter this number in the Flat width column: no calculations needed. You are thus comparing garment to garment, without relying on a theoretical size — and it is precisely these theoretical sizes that vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of an equivalent size. If between two sizes, take the larger one: this is the advice that prevents the most returns.
A word on the letters. These sizes follow a specific nomenclature, and beyond XXL, standard Western ready-to-wear practically doesn't use them: a 4XL, 5XL, or 6XL does not correspond to any common local sizing. Worse, the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another: in this category, an "L" can range from 94 to 112 cm in chest circumference depending on the model. Don't trust the letter, trust the centimeter.

Did you know?
The coiled spiral that dominates this pattern has a name: the koru, in the Maori art of New Zealand. It represents a young silver fern frond still curled up on itself, ready to unfold — hence its meaning of beginning, growth, and renewal. It is found carved on communal houses, tattooed, and painted, and it is today one of the country's most recognizable emblems. Nothing to do with Scandinavia, then, but a graphic tradition just as ancient and just as codified as that of Nordic interlacing.

Is this design Viking?
No. It draws on Polynesian tribal patterns. The large spiral that dominates the design is called a koru in Maori art: it represents a curled fern frond, a symbol of beginnings.
Is the gold shiny?
No, it is a matte gold leaning toward bronze. Truly metallic inks age poorly in the wash and make a design this size look garish.
Is this style available in kids' sizes?
Yes, seven kids' sizes from age 4 to age 14, then eleven adult sizes from XXS to 6XL. The kids' size labels show the child's height in parentheses — that is the manufacturer's reference.
Does this style run the same as the others in this section?
No, it runs much smaller. Its XL corresponds to the S of the other all-over prints. Check the measurement chart above before choosing.
