The World Tree Beneath the Moon
This Viking Yggdrasil t-shirt renders the world tree in silver on black: a gnarled trunk, dense branches, and roots plunging fan-like towards the bottom, all enclosed within a circle of boughs with a crescent moon at the top. The effect is engraved rather than painted—closer to a print than an illustration. Find this model in our Viking t-shirt collection.
The colored version of the same theme, which is more demonstrative, is the Green and Gold Yggdrasil.
What Sets This T-Shirt Apart
Monochrome is unforgiving: the lines must have substance, otherwise the motif falls flat.
- Engraved line work: The tree is constructed with fine hatching, not solid blocks of color—this is what gives relief to a design without color.
- Visible roots: The bottom half of the circle is occupied by the roots, which balances the foliage and avoids a mushroom-shaped design.
- Moon at the peak: A single narrative element, placed high, which provides a reading direction for the circle.
- Cotton: Silver screen printing holds up better on cotton than on synthetic fabrics, where it tends to crack sooner.
If you would like the tree accompanied, the two-raven model adds Odin's birds taking flight from the branches.
Choosing Your Size
The manufacturer does not provide a measurement chart for this model. Rather than leaving you without a reference, here is an estimated range, calculated from the two adult charts documented for other models in the department. These are orders of magnitude, not guaranteed measurements—we prefer to be upfront about that.
| Size | Flat Width | Chest Circumference |
|---|---|---|
| S | 49 to 51 cm | 98 to 102 cm |
| M | 51 to 54 cm | 102 to 108 cm |
| L | 53 to 57 cm | 106 to 114 cm |
| XL | 55 to 60 cm | 110 to 120 cm |
| 2XL | 57 to 63 cm | 114 to 126 cm |
| 3XL | 59 to 66 cm | 118 to 132 cm |
| 4XL | 61 to 69 cm | 122 to 138 cm |
| 5XL | 63 to 72 cm | 126 to 144 cm |
| 6XL | 65 to 75 cm | 130 to 150 cm |
The range widens for larger sizes because the two known charts diverge starting from XL: one increases by 4 cm per size, the other by 6.
The foolproof method: take a t-shirt you already own that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Enter this number into the Flat Width column: no calculations needed. This way, you are comparing a garment to a garment, without relying on a theoretical size—and it is precisely these theoretical sizes that vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of an equivalent size. When between two sizes, take the larger one: this is the advice that avoids the most returns.
A word on the letters. These sizes follow a specific nomenclature, and beyond XXL, standard French off-the-rack clothing hardly uses them: a 4XL, 5XL, or 6XL does not correspond to any common French size. Worse, the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another: in this department, a "L" can range from 94 to 112 cm in chest circumference depending on the model. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.

Did You Know?
It is repeated everywhere that Yggdrasil connects "nine worlds," and the number is indeed in the texts: the Völuspá speaks of nine worlds and nine roots. However, no medieval source provides the complete list. Snorri Sturluson, who wrote the most detailed manual of Norse mythology, never enumerates them all together. The canonical list found today in games, series, and tattoos—Asgard, Midgard, Jötunheim, Vanaheim, Álfheim, Svartálfheim, Niflheim, Muspellheim, Helheim—is a modern reconstruction, assembled by 19th and 20th-century scholars from scattered mentions. The number nine is ancient; the list is not.

Is the print silver or just gray?
It is a light gray ink, not a metallic ink. It gives the look of an engraving, with no sheen. Truly metallic inks hold up poorly in the wash, so we prefer this approach.
Is the design large?
The circle spans the width of the chest, from the top of the breastbone to the bottom of the ribs. It is a generous print, legible from a distance.
What is the difference from the other Yggdrasil design in the range?
This one is monochrome with an engraved look, with a moon. The other is green and gold, more decorative, with gold-tone scrollwork. Same theme, two opposite treatments.
How should I wash a light print on black?
Inside out, at 30 °C (86 °F), without fabric softener, and let it air-dry. Iron it inside out as well, never directly on the design.
