Did you know?
Yggdrasil, the cosmic ash tree, is described in the Völuspá and the Gylfaginning in unexpectedly lavish detail. An eagle perches at its top; the dragon Níðhöggr gnaws at its roots. Between the two runs a squirrel, Ratatosk, whose sole job is to carry the insults that the eagle and the dragon trade, running up and down the trunk without rest. It is probably the only animal in world mythology whose appointed role is to spread spite — and it appears in an otherwise very serious cosmology.
