The Flower of Life has a property that explains why it appears on walls all over the world: it is drawn with a compass alone, with no ruler and no measuring. You set down the point, draw a circle, then move the point to each new intersection and start again. The pattern unfolds on its own, endlessly, through an operation anyone can repeat with a piece of string and a nail. It is the first exercise of every apprentice stonemason — which is why it is found carved in Egypt as well as in the Far East, Spain or Turkey, with no need to imagine any contact between these places.
