This black doesn't scratch: it's vacuum-deposited
The same openwork four-loop knot, in a deep black finish. The contrast against the skin replaces that of shiny metal: the design is read as a silhouette.

What sets this piece apart
- Black creates a silhouette effect: where gold highlights relief, black defines the shape. It's a completely different effect.
- The finish is deposited, not painted: it does not peel and is much more scratch-resistant than lacquer.
- It goes with everything: black is the only finish that never clashes with a watch or other jewelry.

Did you know?
The deep black of steel jewelry comes neither from paint nor a chemical bath, but from an industrial process: Physical Vapor Deposition, or PVD. The piece is placed in a vacuum chamber where a metal is vaporized by bombardment, then condenses onto the surface in a layer only a few millionths of a millimeter thick. The coating isn't placed on top of the steel: it integrates into it. It is the same technique used to harden drill bits and cutting tools—which is why a PVD black finish lasts where lacquer would wear off in a few weeks.
To explore further, our Viking Ring section brings together other models, and our Viking jewelry category holds the rest of our collection.

Can the black flake off?
No. It's a PVD coating applied under vacuum and bonded into the surface of the steel, not paint or varnish.
What is PVD?
Physical vapor deposition: a metal vaporized in a vacuum condenses onto the piece in a layer a few millionths of a millimeter thick.
Is it a triquetra?
No, it's a four-loop witch's knot. The triquetra has three.
